- Wasilla, Alaska (2025): In June 2025, a federal grand jury indicted Sean Mobley, 45, for distributing carfentanil in two transactions in November 2024. One transaction resulted in a non-fatal overdose of an adult, and the other tragically caused a minor's fatal overdose. This marks Alaska's first-ever federal prosecution involving carfentanil. Originally misidentified as fentanyl, the substance was later confirmed through laboratory analysis.
- Provo, Utah (2025): Clint Pendleton was indicted in January 2025 for attempting to acquire approximately 20 grams of carfentanil. Intercepted by U.S. Customs at Los Angeles International Airport, the shipment was traced to Pendleton, who allegedly tracked the package and intended to distribute the drug in Utah. Prosecutors filed charges of attempted possession with intent to distribute. This is the first federal carfentanil case filed in Utah.
- Bronx, New York (2018): In May 2018, the DEA seized more than 100 grams of carfentanil, the first such seizure of its kind in New York. Three individuals were charged with conspiracy to distribute over 100 grams of carfentanil, with undercover DEA operations providing the basis for their indictment. Their case culminated in significant penalties, including a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, providing an early precedent for addressing carfentanil-related crimes harshly.
