Federal agents seized thousands of imitation football jerseys with National Football League (NFL) logos at multiple Southern California airports. According to reports, agents working at both Los Angeles International Airport and Ontario Airport have found 304 boxes of the knock-offs containing nearly 11,000 jerseys coming through both airports since the beginning of the football season last September. A single official jersey from the NFL's own website retails for $274.99. Federal agents estimate that the value of the jerseys combined would be roughly $847,000, with each counterfeit jersey selling for about $79. Brand protection company Mark Monitor released information last year identifying 1,300 different websites selling their own illegal copies of official NFL jerseys. According to the company's research, questionable websites like these are viewed over 56 million times per year and were thought to sell an estimated 800,000 fake jerseys in a year. Investigators report that the majority of the websites selling knockoff NFL jerseys have domain names registered in China. As with many counterfeited products, the quality can suffer. Many of the football jerseys seized are easily recognized through poor-quality stitching, misspelled names or tags and even frayed edges.
