Federal Investigators Uncover Ring of European Cyber-Criminals
Officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) announced today that they had uncovered a ring of Eastern European cyber-criminals that had hijacked over four million computers in the United States and around the globe. According to reports from investigators, the ring consisted of six Estonian nationals as well as one Russian national working as a group under the name Rove Digital . The cyber-thieves had used legitimate internet advertising companies to run ads on peoples' computers. The ads would, once clicked on, infect the user's computer with malware that would force the computer's internet browsers to fake websites when they searched for major companies or entities such as Netflix, iTunes and even the Internal Revenue Service. The computer users would then be forced to generate traffic for false websites and increase the cyber-thieves' revenue. The malware on the infected computers would also prevent the computer users from intalling anti-virus software that would have freed the computers from Rove malware. All told, the cyber-thieves raised as much as $14 million in profits before federal investigators busted them following a two-year investigation named Operation Ghost Click. The six Estonian nationals had been arrested for cyber crimes, while the Russian national remained at large.
