U.S. Border Patrol Agent Convicted Of Harboring An Illegal Immigrant
An agent for the United States Border Patrol was convicted of harboring an illegal immigrant that turned out to be his own father. In 2010, Marcos Manzano, Jr. had been working for the U.S. Border Patrol office in Imperial Beach, near San Diego, California when supervisors asked after the whereabouts of his father, who had been deported in 2008 after being convicted of selling drugs. Manzano denied having any knowledge of his father's whereabouts, though other Border Patrol agents had spotted Manzano's father at the San Ysidro home they shared. The home in San Ysidro had originally been purchased by Manzano's father in 1992. Later, the title had been transferred first to Manzano's mother, then to Manzano himself in 2010. According to reports from federal authorities, Manzano's father was not only residing in the United States illegally, but was selling drugs out of the home he shared with his son. Manzano denied knowing anything about his father's drug-selling activity, but upon searching the house, authorities discovered a hidden room underneath the backyard. Manzano was sentenced last week to six months in a halfway house as well as two years of probation.
